Youth Action Council (YAC)
If You Could Save Just One started because of the systemic barriers our founder faced then trying to get help for her son over 8 years ago. Today, we have the opportunity to help change these systems so that no one has to experience the struggle that they did.
We believe in a Hillyard community where all youth and families have the power and resources to advocate for themselves and shape the community's future.
One way we are doing that is through our new initiative - Just One's Youth Action Council (YAC).
What is YAC?
The Youth Action Council is a group of up to 12 youths that will meet regularly to get hands-on experience in civic engagement, issue prioritization, and community organizing — building a pipeline of young leaders rooted in Hillyard, while Just One learns from youth about how to build responsive programming for our community.
Some activities youths will learn about, explore, and co-create:
- Community landscape assessment and polling
- Voter engagement
- Coalition partnerships
- Telling stories
When
We will meet on a weekly basis October through December, time and date TBD by YAC.
Additional information
- Stipends: Youths can earn up to $50/meeting for attending and actively participating in meetings.
- Commitment: If a youth misses a meeting, that's ok. We know life happens. However, missing more than 1 meeting can lead to potential removal from the program.
No experience? No problem!
We’re here to learn together and build something great for our community!
How to Apply - 8/30 Deadline
This program has limited capacity so we will have youths go through an application and interview process with staff to gauge readiness to participate.
- Fill out our Google Form by 11:59PM on 8/30: forms.gle/wJmVTRKPxPeBwrHq8(opens in new tab)
- If you already submitted an application in Hibox, no need to fill out this Google Form.
- If your youth's application is selected, they will move on to a 30-45 minute interview with our summer program staff. We will send out interview questions ahead of time with more details to come.
